How does a compound crossbow work?
A (compound-) bow works when a string is pulled, and tension in the limbs is stored as kinetic energy. That energy can be transferred to the arrow or bolt.
By placing eccentric pulleys (compounds) in the limbs, the same energy can be generated by applying less force at the end of the draw. The specific shape and design can influence where the force needs to be applied to pull the string. When the force needs to be put into the string at the beginning of the draw instead of at the end of the draw, this is called let-off. Let-off is stated in percentages; these days, it can be as high as 80-90%. This makes cocking or bracing the crossbow easier and reduces the force required to pull the trigger. That creates a better shot.
Cocking or bracing a compound crossbow with let-off can easily be done with a simple stringer cord or bastard string. A 175 lbs compound crossbow with let-off might only need 17 lbs to cock or brace. There are handy tools available to make even that easier to do.
Because of the pulleys (compounds), the string no longer needs to be attached to the limbs in the old-fashioned way. This makes it possible to place the limbs next to the tiller altering the classic shape of a crossbow and making it narrower. THis makes it possible for a narrow compound to be powerfull, fast, acurate and easy to handle in tight spaces (like a hunting blind, or a tree stand)
When to choose for a compound cross bow?
One chooses a recurve crossbow over a compound crossbow when durability, reliability, and easy maintenance are high on the priority list. Nowadays one can buy a above decent compound crossbow for a reasonable budget. That compound crossbow will perform well, and the performance can be measured against the higher-segment recurve crossbows. The compound crossbow requires a different approach to maintenance as replacing a string or replacing the cables cannot be done on the kitchen table and requires specialist knowledge and specialist tools. Compound crossbows have a higher efficiency ratio and have a good-looking modern technical appearance.
