It helps to accelerate the arrow and makes for a smoother release with less handshock. Thus, speed and accuracy of the bow are enhanced.Traditional recurves usually have just a simple arrow shelf and a relatively small "window" (something often completely lacking in horsebows). Basically, you can chose between Takedown Recurve Bows (where exchangeable limbs are attached to a riser - the central piece where you grip the bow) and one-part recurves. Horsebows are a special variant of one-part recurves.Takedown bows are the norm in target shooting (as seen in the Olympic Games), as they have all the necessary bushings to attach sights, stabilizers, magnetic arrow rests and so on.

These bows often have metal risers. More traditional-looking takedowns, often with wooden risers, are for example built for beginners, who want to have the option of changing the draw weight by simply swapping the limbs. But there are also deluxe versions for the experts! People who spell traditional with a capital T often go for one-part recurves, sometimes called hunting recurves. although they are absolutely fine for 3D archery as well. They are lighter in mass, more maneuverable, often shorter. Basically, they are responsive, easier to carry as you trek through the forest, and as they rely less on aids and attachments, they are tailored to the needs of the instinctive shooter.
